Can You Meet Me Halfway? Implementing a Successful Process for Mid-Semester Advising at Your Institution

In 2017, in an effort to increase course completion and persistence, Austin Community College’s High School Programs office implemented a mid-semester advising process for students in its dual credit programs. Over the years, this process has achieved many successes and faced many challenges, both of which have led to the development of the program into what it is today. In this presentation, participants will learn about Austin Community College and their current process, including overarching challenges and successes faced in both implementation and execution. Additionally, participants will hear from four different advisors with distinctive caseloads that each present more unique challenges and allow for tailored approaches to address these challenges.

Over the past decade, leaders at Lee College and Goose Creek ISD in Baytown, Texas have developed a strong dual enrollment partnership with nearly a third of high school graduates taking dual credit and half returning to Lee College after HS. The Lee/Goose Creek partnership has prioritized broadening college access and ensuring all students leave high school on a path that will enable them to earn family-sustain wages. As a partnership, they have implemented various strategies to support this on a large scale, including shared advising, multiple measures placement, support for teacher credentialing, and dual credit embedded into high school career academies and CTE programs of study. In this webinar, attendees will hear directly from Lee/Goose Creek leaders about how they’ve developed an effective partnership, as well as how their work exemplifies emerging findings from the Community College Research Center at Columbia University in studying how college and K12 partnerships are extending ‘guided pathways’ reforms to high school to broaden the benefits of dual enrollment.
Research Rendezvous

Join NACEP’s Research Rendezvous and learn from practiced researchers ways to collect and analyze data whether for assessment and evaluation, program planning, and more. Research Rendezvous is a new meeting-style webinar that offers an interactive environment for individuals looking to learn more about research and ways to incorporate it into their dual enrollment program.
Data collection can be a great way to better understand student needs and build equitable access to education. Led by the NACEP Research Commission, meetings will be topic based and offered at different days and times throughout the year in order to accommodate individuals who may not be able to attend during the Wednesday Webinar timeslot. These meeting-style rendezvous’ will take a limited number of participants, and will not be recorded.

The focus of many dual enrollment programs is on educational access and student success. In order to meet this goal for students traditionally underrepresented in higher education, institutions need to understand the students they serve. This includes understanding the culture of the community and institution to provide impactful programming and appropriate student support, both inside and outside the classroom. This presentation will explore the importance of cultural competency in dual enrollment program planning conversations. We will discuss strategic planning concepts and how cultural understanding can help institutions meet student and community needs.

A state's dual enrollment funding approach can either significantly drive or significantly inhibit equitable program access and participation. This webinar will provide an introduction to the prevalent state dual enrollment funding models and preview the 2023 update to the Funding for Equity report, including an overview of changes to state dual enrollment funding strategies since 2019, when the original Funding for Equity report was released. Dual enrollment leaders from two states that have recently revised their dual enrollment funding mechanisms will share their insights on the impact of these changes and what other states can learn from their experience.

This webinar will offer a panel of experts to share how the 2022 tragedy in Uvalde, Texas, spurred greater cross-institutional collaboration between Austin Community College and its high school partners to improve services for dual credit students in the case of emergencies. The discussion will highlight increased statewide expectations for high school campus safety that affected processes for dual credit instructors during the 2022-23 school year. It will also provide examples of some emergency situations that have affected ACC dual credit students and which have highlighted areas of improvement for communication and coordination with high school partners. Panel participants from both college and high school administrations will share their expertise, experience, and advice for those wishing to begin difficult conversations about emergency preparedness across K-12 and higher ed lines.
That audience members will be inspired to improve preventative planning and collaboration with their partners around emergency management issues in the dual credit space.
It shows ways in which colleges and high schools can collaborate to better serve dual-enrolled students in areas that might not be addressed in traditional academic planning, such as dual management and communication during emergency situations.
